Several Pontefract Ladies were involved in the prestigious Premier inter-county championship finals hosted at Nottingham Squash Club over the weekend 2-3 May. The team was lead by Fiona Moverley from Hull. The Pontefract players were Lauren Siddall, home on annual leave from her studies in South Africa, Katie Smith, Hannah Shipley and Emma Campion.
Having gained a bye due to Kent withdrawing, the first match was against Cheshire, the title holders of the last 3 years, who had beaten Gloucestershire 4-1 in the quarters. Also through to the semis were Surrey with a 5-0 win over Middlesex and Northumberland who had beaten Essex 4-1.
First on court, Emma at 5th string won a tight 3-2 match against Annie Openshaw-Blower after trailing 2 games to 1. Katie just missed out to Olivia Howell losing 15-13 in the 5th game. Although Hannah lost to Kirsty West, Fiona and Lauren had comfortable 3-0 wins against Rachel Chadwick and Jess Davies. So with a 3-2 win, Yorkshire were through to the finals to meet Northumberland who had beaten Surrey in the other semi.
In the finals, the first 2 matches went Northumberland’s way, Emma losing to Emma Gregson 3-0 and Hannah 3-1 to Hannah Clift. However, with a strong top order, Yorkshire followed through with with comfortable 3-0 wins for Fiona, Lauren and Katie against Lucie Beecroft, Kim Hay and Sam Ward respectively.
So Yorkshire won the title which they had previously held in 2008,2009 and 2010.
A good weekend was enjoyed by all, with Emma and Hannah making their debut in the Premier league and a welcome return to the team for Fiona who rejoined the WSA tour last May and played in the Assam Allan British Open last week.
