Pontefract Squash & Leisure Club’s two Yorkshire Premier League teams are ready to return to action, with the 2026/27 season promising fresh faces, fierce competition and another exciting campaign at the highest level of county squash. After a well-earned summer break, both Pontefract teams are preparing to embark on a new season. There have been a number of arrivals and departures during the off-season, meaning supporters can expect to see new talent joining many of the familiar faces who have represented the club so proudly. The new campaign begins in fitting fashion on Wednesday 30 September, when Pontefract 1 and Pontefract 2 meet in an opening-night club derby. The match starts at 7:30pm and should provide an excellent early opportunity for supporters to see both squads in action.

The champions return

Pontefract’s first team begins the season as the back-to-back Yorkshire Premier League champion following two outstanding title-winning campaigns. The first of those successes ended a 15-year wait for the crown and restored Pontefract to the top of Yorkshire team squash. The challenge now is to maintain that standard and pursue what would be a remarkable third consecutive championship. It will not be an easy task. Pontefract’s rivals have also strengthened during the summer and will arrive determined to disrupt the first team’s title defence. Every fixture will matter as the competition progresses from its opening matches in September through to the closing weeks of March. The players are looking forward to that challenge and to testing themselves against some of the strongest teams and individuals in the league.

Two Pontefract teams competing at Premier League level

Having both Pontefract 1 and Pontefract 2 competing in the Yorkshire Premier League is a tremendous reflection of the strength and depth of squash at the club. The second team will enter the new season with ambitions of its own. A refreshed squad combining incoming players with established Pontefract representatives creates an exciting opportunity to compete, develop and make a strong impression across the campaign. The opening derby will immediately place both teams in the spotlight. Although club bragging rights will inevitably be involved, the occasion also offers a celebration of Pontefract squash and the quality of players representing the club this season. Following the derby, the two teams will face opposition including Hallamshire, Chapel Allerton, Ferriby Hall, Dunnington, Queens, Harrogate and Cleethorpes.

Home Premier League evenings offer spectators the chance to watch elite squash at close quarters and experience the speed, skill and intensity of the sport from directly outside the court. The support from the glass room has played an important role in Pontefract’s recent success, and the players are looking forward to welcoming members, supporters and squash followers back throughout the season. All currently scheduled fixtures take place on Wednesday evenings and begin at 7:30pm. Home and away status is shown on the fixture graphics below.
